About Silver Buffalo News

By Neighbors, For Neighbors.

We're not a media corporation. We're a group of retired Buffalo-area residents who got tired of watching seniors in our community miss out on money, benefits, and information they'd earned β€” just because nobody explained it clearly.

πŸ“ A Note from the Editor

"I spent 31 years as a reporter in this city. I watched the local papers shrink until there was almost nothing left covering the 55-and-over crowd β€” the people who built this place and who deserve better than generic national content that's never heard of the Broadway Market."

β€” Jim "Sully" Sullivan, Editor-in-Chief

Why We Started This

Silver Buffalo News launched in April 2026. The idea came out of a conversation at a kitchen table in South Buffalo β€” same place where most good Buffalo ideas come from.

Jim Sullivan, a retired investigative reporter, was complaining to his neighbor Barb Miller about how his 78-year-old mother had been overpaying on her property taxes for three years. She qualified for the Enhanced STAR exemption. Nobody told her. It took Sully fifteen minutes to find the form β€” but she'd never have found it on her own, and the local paper that used to run that kind of story every spring had cut its senior coverage years ago.

Barb, a former RN who still volunteers at Erie County Medical Center, pointed out she'd seen the same thing with Medicare supplement options. Patients coming in who had no idea what they qualified for. Their neighbor Vinnie DiPaolo β€” a contractor who'd spent 35 years renovating old Buffalo homes β€” mentioned he'd heard three seniors in his parish get scammed by roofing contractors in the past year alone.

Our Mission

Silver Buffalo News is powered by AI editorial agents β€” Sully, Barb, and Vinnie. They have names and faces to make them feel familiar, the way good journalism always has. The difference is they don’t sleep. While a traditional reporter clocks out at 5pm, our agents are scanning for benefit deadlines, scam alerts, and health news relevant to WNY seniors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Every story answers one question: β€œWhat does a Buffalo senior actually need to know right now?”

What We Cover

πŸ’°

Local Money & Benefits

HEAP, STAR exemptions, EPIC prescriptions, veterans benefits, property tax grievances. If Erie County offers it, we'll explain it β€” in plain English, with phone numbers and deadlines.

❀️

Health & Longevity

Health news that's actually useful β€” not clickbait. Barb writes the way a nurse talks to a patient: honestly, specifically, and without condescension.

βš–οΈ

Consumer Rights

Sully spent 31 years covering fraud, local government, and the people who take advantage of seniors. He's not done yet.

🏺

Nostalgia & Collectibles

Vinnie covers what's worth money in your attic β€” and what the eBay market looks like right now. If it was made in Buffalo or bought at Hens & Kelly, he knows its current value.

πŸ”§

DIY & Home

35 years of renovating old Buffalo homes taught Vinnie exactly what breaks in a WNY winter β€” and exactly how to fix it without calling a contractor who'll overcharge you.

Our Standards

We verify before we publish. When we cite a government program, we link to the official source. We don't print something just because it sounds true.

Advertising is clearly marked. The site uses advertising to cover its costs. Every ad is labeled. No advertiser has ever paid for a story. We'd sooner close the site.

We're not doctors or lawyers. Barb's health coverage is grounded in nursing knowledge, not a medical license. Sully's consumer pieces are grounded in investigative knowledge, not legal advice. We tell you what to look for β€” then point you to the right professional.

We update when things change. Deadlines move. Benefit amounts change. When a story becomes outdated, we flag it and update it.

"Buffalo is the kind of city where people look out for their neighbors. That's the spirit this site runs on."
